Making the Data Work for You

Making Data Work for You
Rebecca Gau

Are you ready to use data? It’s the first question Mrs. Rebecca Gau from the Governor’s Office of Innovation asked attendees anxiously awaiting tips on how to best make the data work. As she led the group through four activities focusing on data, she was keen to point out that establishing your vision is paramount to the process of using data to help reach school and district goals.

“Identify one specific goal and look at the data from the same way together to focus your efforts,” Mrs. Gau shared.

Through additional activities, Mrs. Gau stressed the importance of using valid and reliable data. She added that boards should be cautious in comparing disparate sets of data and wary of hidden assumptions in data collection and analysis. To make the data do the work, Mrs. Gau outlined pros and cons with various data presentations, such as bar charts, pie charts and scatterplots.
