When only 27 of 100 high school graduates were still enrolled
in community college two years following graduation, Wickenburg High School
knew they had a challenge that needed to be tackled. They launched a journey through
Move On When Ready, with a goal to greatly increase the number of high school
students who leave their system ready to do college-level work without
remediation.
“We began with a shift in strategy and transformed
instruction and our diploma system so our students will be prepared,” said
Wickenburg High School Principal, Mrs. Jacquelyn Jacobson.
Wickenburg High School started with a full year of planning
and intensive training for staff on the ACT Quality Core Curriculum. Students
will graduate with a Grand Canyon Diploma after taking exams that prove their
in-depth learning in writing, analysis and problem-solving. A pacing calendar was set as well as a
redesign of their master schedule to include required interventions. Next, they
brought on the Center for the Future of Arizona and the National Center on
Education and the Economy as partners. With support from an advisory board and
before and after school programs, the school saw an increase in Math AIMS
scores of 5 percent. Current Galileo benchmark results indicate that 80 percent
of sophomores on track to pass AIMS reading, indicating the program is
effective and poised for success.
